Nigerian atheist Mubarak Bala, initially sentenced to 24 years for blasphemy in 2022, has now had his sentence reduced to five years on appeal.

The judges deemed the original sentence too harsh.

Bala has already served four years but it’s unclear when he’ll be released.

His case stirred global outcry after he was arrested in 2020 for posting critical comments about Islam.

While some celebrated the reduced sentence, concerns remain about freedom of speech in Nigeria.
