M23 rebels have taken control of Nyanzale town in eastern DR Congo, driving out the military.

The town, which was a safe haven for displaced people, saw renewed violence forcing thousands to flee again.

The rebels, originally formed to protect the Tutsi population, have been accused of indiscriminate firing, leading to casualties.

Despite their denial of being backed by Rwanda, the situation highlights ongoing tensions in the region.

The European Union has called for dialogue to address the underlying issues fuelling the conflict.
