However, Dr. Nobile explains that with some simple strategies, social interactions can become easier and more enjoyable over time. This can help prevent feelings of being left out, allowing people to feel more comfortable in group settings.

Dr. Nobile offers two key tips for overcoming social awkwardness. First, practice active listening. Instead of focusing on what you’ll say next, give your full attention to the speaker.

Show that you’re listening by nodding, making sounds like “wow” or “I see,” and asking follow-up questions. This not only helps you stay calm but also keeps the conversation flowing smoothly.

Second, have a few conversation starters ready before you go to events where you might feel uneasy. Think of general topics or questions you can ask, like talking about a current trend or asking about someone’s hobbies.

Having these ready will help you feel more confident and keep the conversation going, especially in situations where you might not know many people.

Dr. Nobile also suggests additional tips to help with social confidence: use positive body language, ask open-ended questions, mirror the other person’s speech and gestures to build connection, and practice small talk in everyday situations.
