X (formerly Twitter) has shut its office in Brazil due to a dispute over censorship, according to BBC News
. The company closed the office after Brazilian Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes threatened to arrest its local legal representative unless it followed his orders to block certain accounts.
These accounts were alleged to be spreading misinformation, many of which are linked to supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro.
Moraes had imposed fines of 100,000 reais per day for any accounts X reactivated and placed the company’s legal representatives under threat of legal action.
X’s owner, Elon Musk, criticized Moraes, leading to further legal trouble. Musk argued that Moraes’ actions are inconsistent with democratic principles and said shutting down the Brazilian office was necessary to protect staff.
Despite the office closure, Brazilians can still use X. The decision reflects the company’s struggle to balance its operations with legal demands in Brazil, according to BBC News.
