The WHO Just Called Mpox a Global Health Emergency—Should We Be Concerned?
The World Health Organization (WHO) recently declared mpox, previously known as monkeypox, a global health emergency.
This announcement, made on August 14, 2024, is a serious step, but it mainly concerns Africa where the outbreak is occurring. Mpox is in the same family as smallpox but is not related to chickenpox.
The recent surge in cases is due to Clade I of mpox, which is more serious and has been linked to the current outbreak.
Although mpox is mostly affecting regions in Africa, the situation is being monitored globally.
In the U.S., the risk is considered low, but people at higher risk, such as those with multiple sexual partners or weakened immune systems, should be cautious.
Precautions include good hygiene, avoiding close contact with infected people, and getting vaccinated if you are at risk.
If you notice symptoms like a rash, fever, or swollen lymph nodes, especially after contact with someone who has mpox or travel to affected areas, contact your doctor right away.
For now, staying informed and following basic preventive measures can help manage and reduce the risk of spreading mpox.
