TikTok often highlights the latest health trends, such as “hot girl walks” or drinking raw milk. One popular trend is using herbs or supplements to ease pain, boost energy, or improve digestion.
However, Parade reports that while supplements may seem helpful, they aren’t always safe—even those labeled “natural.” Since supplements aren’t approved by the FDA before hitting stores, they can be harmful if overused.
The Cleveland Clinic, mentioned by Parade, warns that too much of certain vitamins can lead to serious health issues, including liver damage.
A recent August 2024 study in JAMA Network Open, as Parade highlights, found that 5% of adults take one of six supplements that could harm the liver.
These include ashwagandha, black cohosh, garcinia cambogia, green tea extract (not the tea itself), red yeast rice, and turmeric or curcumin.
These supplements are often used for various reasons, from improving sleep and mood to aiding in weight loss and digestion.
Parade also points out that liver damage might not show symptoms right away, but when symptoms do appear, they can include nausea, loss of appetite, itching, and yellowing of the skin and eyes.
Parade recommends safer alternatives, like eating blueberries, avocados, or nuts for brain health, or trying cherries and milk to help with sleep.
Mindful breathing and exercise are also natural ways to boost energy.
If you’re considering taking these supplements, Parade suggests exploring other, safer options for meeting your health needs.
