Official: 21,000 Displaced in Abyei Urgently Need Help After Deadly Clashes

The chief administrator of Abyei, a disputed area between Sudan and South Sudan, reports that 21,000 returnees fleeing conflict in Sudan urgently require aid.

Deadly clashes over the weekend led to 52 deaths, including two UN peacekeepers. Many displaced are receiving temporary aid from the UN, but it’s not enough.

The situation is dire, exacerbated by an influx of returnees and ongoing insecurity. Humanitarian agencies are expected to assess needs soon.

The dispute over Abyei’s status remains unresolved, complicating efforts to help those in need.
