Taiwan’s defense ministry said on Tuesday that China’s live-fire drills near the island were part of their usual annual training but could also be a way for China to show its power in the Taiwan Strait.
The drills took place near Niushan island, which is close to Taiwan’s Matsu islands. Taiwan is closely watching these drills, and while it believes they are part of China’s regular military exercises, it also thinks they could be an attempt to “scare” Taiwan.
Last week, China held war games to send a message against “separatist actions.” Taiwan’s Premier Cho Jung-tai said China shouldn’t be doing drills like this because they threaten peace.
Taiwan has been facing regular military actions from China for the past five years.
China doesn’t like Taiwan’s new president, Lai Ching-te, because he rejects China’s claims over Taiwan, saying only the people of Taiwan can decide their future.
