Tim Walz, the Democratic vice presidential candidate, is a proud dad to two children: Gus and Hope Walz. At the 2024 Democratic National Convention, Tim and his kids made headlines when Gus tearfully cheered for his dad onstage.
Gus and Hope’s story is deeply personal. Tim and his wife Gwen used fertility treatments to conceive their children.
While Tim referred to this as IVF, Gwen clarified that Hope was actually conceived through intrauterine insemination (IUI), a type of fertility treatment.
Gus, who is 17, has a nonverbal learning disorder, ADHD, and an anxiety disorder.
Despite these challenges, Tim and Gwen see Gus’s conditions as his strengths, noting his keen attention to detail and his supportive role as a son and brother.
Hope, 23, recently graduated from Montana State University and has been actively involved in her father’s campaigns.
She played a role in a public service announcement with Tim and even “tricked” him into trying a slingshot ride at the Minnesota State Fair. Tim credits Hope for influencing his stance on issues like assault weapon bans.
Tim and Gwen Walz’s children have been integral to their lives, both personally and publicly.
