Macron Calls Emergency Europe Meeting on Ukraine Crisis (Source: Reuters)
French President Emmanuel Macron is hosting an urgent meeting of European leaders on Monday to discuss the war in Ukraine.
This comes after US officials suggested Europe might not be included in peace talks to end the conflict. According to Reuters, Macron’s office said the meeting will focus on the sudden changes in the US approach to Ukraine and the risks it poses to Europe’s security.
Leaders from Britain, Germany, Poland, Italy, NATO, and the European Union will attend the summit. This includes British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and others. The meeting aims to address the growing concerns about the US shifting its stance on Ukraine.
Last week, US President Donald Trump shocked Europe by announcing he had spoken directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin without consulting European allies or Ukraine. He also said he would start a peace process, leaving Europe worried about being left out.
To make matters worse, Trump’s Ukraine envoy, Keith Kellogg, said Europe would not have a role in Ukraine peace talks. This came after the US sent a questionnaire to European countries asking what they could do to help guarantee Ukraine’s security. According to a Reuters report, the US also asked Europe what support they would need from Washington to join these security plans.
The European Union, which includes 27 countries, has struggled to agree on a clear plan to end the war in Ukraine. Despite holding many summits, the EU has often been divided and slow to act. Some EU officials are unhappy that only a few leaders were invited to this meeting, instead of all 27 member states.
Macron’s office tried to ease these concerns by saying Monday’s meeting could lead to more discussions with all countries interested in peace and European security.
This emergency summit shows how serious the situation has become. With the US taking unexpected steps and Europe feeling left out, leaders are scrambling to find a way to support Ukraine and protect their own security.
