Labour’s victories in regional mayoral contests have further intensified the Conservative Party’s election woes, with incumbent Andy Street losing the West Midlands race by a narrow margin.

Despite a disappointing set of local council results and losing control of multiple councils, the Tories only secured one mayoral win out of 11 contests across England.

While there’s been speculation about discontent among Conservative MPs towards party leader Rishi Sunak, talk of a leadership change has subsided.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer celebrated the party’s successes, urging Sunak to call a general election.

Smaller opposition parties like the Liberal Democrats and Greens also made gains, while Reform UK performed strongly in a by-election.
