A student at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has been arrested for allegedly killing final-year Biological Science student Joana Deladem Yabani.

According to myjoyonline.com, the university confirmed that the suspect, who lived in the same hostel as the victim, was caught after police reviewed CCTV footage.

Police found clothes the suspect wore during the crime, which will be used as evidence. Myjoyonline.com reports that authorities have urged students to remain calm as investigations continue.

In response to the tragedy, KNUST has increased security on campus. More than 50 police officers have been deployed, including special patrol teams from the Anti-Robbery Squad and SWAT Unit, according to myjoyonline.com. Security officers have also been stationed at key areas to ensure student safety.

KNUST management, together with the police, is working to make the campus safer. The university revealed to myjoyonline.com that 80% of the school, including the area where the crime happened, is under CCTV surveillance, with plans to cover the entire campus soon.

Students have been advised to take extra precautions, such as walking in pairs at night, avoiding dark and lonely places, and not carrying valuables late at night. They are also encouraged to report any suspicious activity immediately.

KNUST has expressed deep sorrow over Miss Yabani’s tragic death. Myjoyonline.com states that the university has assured students of its commitment to keeping them safe and has extended its heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family.
