Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II surprised everyone on New Year’s Eve by announcing she’ll step down on January 14, making it exactly 52 years since she became queen.

She’s handing over the throne to her son, Crown Prince Frederik, known for his adventurous spirit, including a daring ski expedition across Greenland.

Unlike traditional royal ceremonies, there won’t be a formal crowning for Frederik. With his wife, Princess Mary, they’re seen as modern and down-to-earth, emphasizing normalcy for their four kids.

Queen Margrethe’s decision to abdicate came after reflecting on her future post-back surgery in 2023. The news was shared by BBC, providing insights into Denmark’s royal transition.
