Elon Musk, the richest person in the world, has not received an invitation to the UK government’s upcoming International Investment Summit. This decision comes after Musk made controversial social media posts during riots in the UK last month.
The riots started after a tragic stabbing in Southport that resulted in the deaths of three children at a dance class. Musk had predicted civil unrest in the UK and criticized the prime minister on X, the social media platform he owns.
The summit, scheduled for October 14, is a significant event where Prime Minister Keir Starmer hopes to attract major investments to boost the UK economy.
Musk attended the event last year and was a key participant in the AI Summit, where he had a discussion with former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
Both Musk and the government have been approached for comments regarding his absence from this year’s summit.
During the riots, Musk shared a conspiracy theory about the UK allegedly creating “detainment camps” on the Falkland Islands for rioters, which he later deleted.
His comments drew harsh criticism from UK ministers, who deemed them “totally unjustifiable” and “pretty deplorable.” The BBC understands that these incidents contributed to the decision to exclude him from the summit, which is expected to host many of the world’s top investors.
The summit comes two weeks before the Budget announcement, and the government is promoting it as a vital opportunity to attract foreign investment. The Labour Party promised to hold this event within its first 100 days of being in office.
Musk has a history of interest in the UK, previously being shown potential sites for a car and battery gigafactory. However, he has mentioned that he chose to open a site in Germany instead, partly due to Brexit complications.
Musk is also known for regularly attending similar investment events in France, where he had a notable lunch with President Emmanuel Macron earlier this summer.
In his ownership of X, Musk lifted bans on several far-right figures, including the Britain First group. The UK is now considering stricter online safety laws in response to the role of misinformation in the riots.
Elon Musk is well-known for his ventures, including Tesla and SpaceX, and is estimated to have a net worth of around $228 billion, largely due to his shares in Tesla.
Over the years, he has captivated the public with his various business endeavors and opinions on numerous issues.
Despite identifying himself as politically moderate in the past, he has recently shown support for Donald Trump, officially endorsing him for the 2024 presidential election after a failed assassination attempt against Trump
