A 34-year-old man in Colorado died four days after being bitten by one of his pet Gila monsters.
These venomous reptiles are native to the southwestern United States and their bites are typically not fatal to humans.
However, experts suggest the man may have had an allergic reaction. The last known human death from a Gila monster bite was in 1930.
The man owned two of these lizards, which are the largest in the country. Ownership of Gila monsters without a license is illegal in Colorado.
Authorities are conducting further testing to determine the exact cause of death and plan to study the venom for more information.
