China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi has strongly rejected NATO’s claims that Beijing is helping Russia in its war on Ukraine. He also warned the Western alliance against provoking conflicts.
These comments came after NATO leaders accused China of significantly supporting Russia’s military efforts and called for Beijing to stop all material and political support, such as supplying dual-use materials that can serve both civilian and military purposes.
The accusations included transferring technology and satellite imagery to Moscow. It’s estimated that a large portion of Russia’s machine tools and microelectronics now come from China.
Additionally, NATO claimed China is involved in cyber activities and spreading disinformation.
In a call with the Netherlands’ new foreign minister, Wang Yi insisted that China is a force for peace and stability and dismissed NATO’s accusations as baseless.
He urged NATO to avoid inciting confrontation with China and to “stay within its bounds.”
China has consistently denied aiding Russia and maintains it is neutral, calling for peace while proposing a plan Ukraine has rejected.
Despite this, experts point out that China’s purchase of Russian oil and gas has helped support Russia’s economy amidst sanctions.
China’s stance often aligns with Russia’s, not labeling the conflict a war, and President Xi Jinping maintains close ties with President Vladimir Putin.
Meanwhile, Beijing accuses the US and its allies of exacerbating the conflict by providing weapons to Ukraine.
