The EU and China are discussing reducing planned import taxes on Chinese electric cars, which could prevent price hikes in Europe.
Both sides spoke about these tariffs in a recent call, aiming to ease tensions despite ongoing disagreements.
The EU claims Chinese electric vehicles benefit from unfair subsidies, prompting threats of tariffs up to 38%. The talks mark the first step towards negotiation since these tariffs were proposed.
The EU insists any agreement must address what it sees as harmful subsidies supporting Chinese EVs.
China, however, remains opposed and has warned of potential legal action through the World Trade Organization.
