Taking your blood pressure meds at the right time of day can be important for lowering your heart attack risk, but there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, according to cardiologists.
Dr. Hoang Nguyen from MemorialCare Heart & Vascular Institute notes that while traditionally, doctors suggest taking meds in the morning because blood pressure is higher during the day, this might not work for everyone.
Recent studies show that taking blood pressure medication at night might actually reduce heart attack risk by up to 50%. However, not all research agrees, with some finding no significant difference between morning and night doses.
If you miss a dose, don’t panic. If you’re only a few hours late, just take it as soon as you remember. If you’re much later, skip the missed dose and continue with your next scheduled dose. It’s important not to double up on medication to make up for a missed dose.
For more personalized advice, consult your doctor, as individual needs can vary. Using reminders like alarms or pill boxes can help you stay on track with your medication routine.
