Angola’s Constitutional Court has nullified the five-year prison sentence of José Filomeno dos Santos, the son of former President José Eduardo dos Santos, for fraud.
The sentence stemmed from his involvement in the unauthorized transfer of $500 million from Angola’s Sovereign Fund to a UK private account.
The court ruled the conviction unconstitutional due to violations of legal principles and the defendant’s rights.
José Filomeno dos Santos, also known as Zenu, previously served as the head of Angola’s Sovereign Wealth Fund.
The transfer occurred in 2017, shortly before his father stepped down as president after a 38-year tenure.
José Eduardo dos Santos was succeeded by Joao Lourenço, his chosen successor and former defense minister.
