According to CNN, former BBC News presenter Huw Edwards has been accused of three crimes related to creating indecent images of children.
The alleged offenses occurred between December 2020 and April 2022 and involved images shared on WhatsApp.
Edwards, 62, was arrested in November 2023 and formally charged on June 26, 2024, after receiving authorization from the Crown Prosecution Service.
He is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London on Wednesday.
The Metropolitan Police stated that Edwards is accused of having six category A images, which are the most serious type, 12 category B pictures, and 19 category C photographs on WhatsApp. If found guilty, he could face up to 10 years in prison.
Edwards, who was one of the BBC’s most prominent figures, resigned from his role in late April after a 40-year career.
The BBC’s annual report revealed that he was the corporation’s third highest-paid employee, earning between £475,000 and £479,999 in the period from April 2023 to March 2024[3].
The police have reminded the media and public that this is an ongoing case and that no information should be published, including on social media, that could prejudice future court proceedings.
