Passenger Plane Crash in Kazakhstan: 38 Dead, Survivors Tell Heartbreaking Stories
A tragic plane crash in Kazakhstan has left 38 people dead and many others fighting for their lives. According to local officials, the Azerbaijan Airlines flight had 69 passengers onboard when it went down near the city of Aktau early Wednesday morning. BBC reported that the plane caught fire during an emergency landing attempt, splitting apart on impact.
The Embraer 190 jet had taken off from Baku, Azerbaijan, and was headed to Grozny, Russia. However, heavy fog forced the flight to divert. BBC shared shocking footage of the plane descending quickly with its landing gear down before it burst into flames upon hitting the ground.
Unconfirmed reports from Russian media suggest the crash might have been caused by a collision with birds, but investigations by both Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan are ongoing. Embraer, the Brazilian company that built the aircraft, told BBC it is ready to help authorities.
BBC highlighted heartbreaking accounts from families affected. One woman traveling to spend the holidays with her children in Grozny tragically died, while another mother, who had medical tests for her sick child, remains missing.
A young woman shared her pain with BBC’s Azerbaijani service, explaining that her brother survived the crash but their father is still unaccounted for.
Survivors were seen crawling out of the wreckage, many with visible injuries. Emergency teams worked quickly to put out the fire and search through the debris. The airline has since canceled flights on this route while the investigation continues.
As BBC noted, the Embraer 190 has a strong safety record, making this crash especially shocking. For now, families and authorities are left searching for answers amid the devastation.
