The FDA has issued a new recall for walnuts due to a possible contamination with Listeria, a dangerous bacteria that can cause severe health problems.
According to Parade, Stutz Packing Company in California is recalling 1-pound packages of Shelled Walnuts after tests showed that the product may be contaminated.
The recall was announced on July 19, 2024, and is labeled as “High Risk” by the FDA, which means that consuming the affected walnuts could lead to serious health issues or even death.
Listeria is especially dangerous for young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems.
Symptoms can include vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and in severe cases, brain and blood infections, as Parade explains. The affected walnuts were sold in Arizona and Texas, with over 2,500 cases involved in the recall.
The issue was discovered during routine testing, and Stutz Packing Company has stopped production and distribution of the product while the FDA investigates further. Other sizes and varieties of Shelled Walnuts are not affected by the recall.
Parade reports that anyone who bought the recalled walnuts should throw them away or return them immediately. For more information, customers can contact the company directly through email or phone.
This recall highlights the importance of food safety and the risks of contamination, as Parade emphasizes in their detailed coverage.
