Wallace “Wally” Amos, the founder of Famous Amos cookies, has passed away at the age of 88, Parade reports.
Amos, who started his famous cookie brand in 1975 in Los Angeles, died on August 13 at his home in Honolulu due to complications from dementia.
Born on July 1, 1936, in Tallahassee, Florida, Amos moved to New York City as a teenager and later worked as a junior agent at the William Morris talent agency, becoming the first Black agent at the company, Parade notes.
In 1975, he used a $25,000 loan from friends to open his first bakery on Sunset Boulevard, where he baked small, handmade chocolate chip cookies using a special family recipe.
The Famous Amos brand quickly gained popularity in Hollywood and expanded across the U.S. by the 1980s.
After selling the company, Amos continued to promote his cookies, and later transitioned into a career as an author and speaker.
Parade highlights Amos’s commitment to quality and his impact on the cookie industry.
