Protests in Kenya over new tax proposals turned deadly as police shot and killed at least five demonstrators, with parts of parliament set on fire in Nairobi.

President William Ruto has deployed the military to restore order, condemning what he called “violence and anarchy.”

The protests, sparked by an unpopular finance bill containing tax hikes, intensified after MPs passed the amended legislation.

Amid international concern and support from African leaders, the government faces calls for dialogue and withdrawal of the contentious bill.
