India aimed to eliminate tuberculosis (TB) by 2025, ahead of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

However, the World Health Organization reported that India had the highest global TB burden, with 27% of new cases in 2022.

Despite Prime Minister Modi’s commitment, challenges include the complexity of TB, the lack of a clear understanding of vaccine requirements, and the difficulty in distinguishing current from past infections.

The Indian Council of Medical Research is conducting a trial with two vaccines, VPM1002 and Immuvac, targeting a 2024 result.

Critics question the trial’s duration and emphasize the need for a holistic approach, combining testing, treatment, nutrition, and vaccination for effective TB elimination.( Source: BBC)
