U.S. Vice President Vance Criticizes Europe Over Free Speech and Elections

At a big meeting in Munich, Germany, U.S. Vice President JD Vance accused European leaders of limiting free speech and being afraid of their own people.

According to Reuters, Vance spoke at the Munich Security Conference, where he surprised many by saying Europe’s biggest threat isn’t Russia or China—it’s Europe itself.

He claimed European governments are shutting down social media, raiding homes over online comments, and even canceling elections, which he called a danger to democracy.

Vance didn’t talk much about the war in Ukraine, even though it was a major topic at the conference. Instead, he focused on criticizing countries like Germany, Sweden, and the UK for what he called unfair actions against their own citizens.

For example, he mentioned Germany raiding people for anti-feminist posts and Sweden convicting a Christian activist.

Reuters reported that Vance also targeted Romania, where elections were canceled last year over fears of Russian interference. Vance dismissed these concerns, saying if a little foreign meddling can ruin a democracy, it wasn’t strong to begin with.

He questioned why the U.S. should support Europe’s defense of democracy when, in his view, Europe isn’t living up to its own values.

Many European leaders were shocked by Vance’s speech. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius responded by saying Vance’s comparison of Europe to authoritarian regimes was “not acceptable.” Others, like Nathalie Tocci, a think tank director, said Vance’s words showed the U.S. administration wants to weaken the European Union and its democracies.

In short, as reported by Reuters, Vance’s speech in Munich highlighted deep tensions between the U.S. and Europe over free speech, democracy, and how to handle threats like Russia.

While Vance argued Europe is its own worst enemy, many Europeans see his comments as an attack on their way of life.
