People with restraining orders for domestic violence can’t own guns, the US Supreme Court has ruled. This decision upholds a 30-year-old law that bars these individuals from having firearms.
The ruling came after a lower court had tried to overturn the law. The case involved Zackey Rahimi, a Texas man with a violent history who kept his guns despite a court order.
The Supreme Court decided 8-1 that disarming those who pose a threat is common sense. Chief Justice John Roberts said this aligns with the nation’s historical gun laws.
Justice Clarence Thomas dissented, worried about Second Amendment rights.
This ruling marks a rare win for gun control and shows the Court’s acknowledgment of the risks posed by armed domestic abusers.
