A police officer in Ohio has been charged with murder for fatally shooting a pregnant woman named Ta’Kiya Young.

Young, who was 21 and 25 weeks pregnant, was shot last August, and both she and her unborn daughter died. The shooting occurred when police tried to stop Young for questioning about suspected shoplifting.

The grand jury in Columbus decided there was enough evidence to charge Officer Connor Grubb with murder, involuntary manslaughter, and assault.

Bodycam footage showed Young driving toward the officer while he was telling her to get out of the car. Grubb’s lawyers claim he acted in self-defense because he felt threatened by the moving vehicle.

The local police union argues that the charges are politically motivated and insists that officers often have to make quick decisions in dangerous situations.

Blendon Township Police Chief John Belford said the department is reviewing the case but hasn’t yet judged Grubb’s actions.

Young’s family and their lawyer are calling the arrest a step toward justice and reform in police practices. They describe the past year as incredibly painful, especially for Young’s two young sons.

The shooting, captured on video, has sparked further discussions about police conduct and accountability.
