Michael Sullivan spent over 27 years in a Massachusetts prison for a murder he always said he didn’t commit. In 2013, he was freed after new DNA evidence showed he was innocent.

This month, Sullivan received $13 million from the state, but Massachusetts law limits wrongful conviction payouts to $1 million.

While he appreciates the compensation, Sullivan says the money can’t make up for the years he lost, including the time he spent away from his mother and four siblings, who passed away while he was in prison.
