Ursula von der Leyen has been re-elected as the President of the European Commission. In a secret vote, 401 Members of the European Parliament supported her, surpassing the required number by 41.

Originally elected in 2019, she will now serve another five years.

After the vote, she expressed her gratitude, calling it a special moment and a sign of strong confidence. She promised to boost European defense and stick to climate goals, also vowing to fight against demagogues and extremists.

She plans to work with all democratic forces in the Parliament.

Her nomination was approved by EU leaders last month, though not unanimously.

She secured support from her own European People’s Party, as well as the Socialist & Democrats, Renew, and Greens, but faced opposition from 284 MEPs, including the far-right group Patriots for Europe.

European leaders, like Germany’s Olaf Scholz, praised her re-election.

Alongside von der Leyen, António Costa will head the European Council, and Kaja Kallas will become the EU’s foreign affairs chief.
