UK to Return Ghana’s Stolen Gold Items After 150 Years: BBC Unveils Loan Agreement

The UK is set to return 32 looted items, including a gold peace pipe, taken from the Asante king’s court in Ghana 150 years ago.

The Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) and the British Museum will lend 17 and 15 pieces, respectively, in long-term loan deals. The items, considered the Asante royal government’s “Crown Jewels,” were taken during 19th-Century conflicts.

Ghana’s negotiator hopes for cultural cooperation, but some fear loans may imply UK ownership acceptance.

The three-year agreements, not with the government but the Asante king, aim to display the items in Kumasi’s Manhyia Palace Museum.
