General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of Uganda’s president, returned to X (formerly Twitter) after quitting just a week earlier to focus on his military duties. His return has stirred controversy as he promised to “shake up the world” with his bold statements.
Muhoozi, now 50 years old, has recently become more involved in politics, which breaks military rules. This has led many to speculate about his potential plans to take over from his father, President Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled Uganda since 1986.
Critics have taken issue with his posts, particularly his recent threat to arrest opposition leaders who wear anything resembling Uganda’s military uniform.
Muhoozi also made a wave by threatening to deport a US diplomat who allegedly did not salute him. He even expressed anger about the BBC’s coverage of his social media activity.
This is not the first time Muhoozi has quit and returned to X. In 2022, he left briefly before coming back with more controversial posts. One notable incident involved his tweet about possibly invading neighboring Kenya, which led to an apology from his father.
Muhoozi’s recent threats, including one to Bobi Wine, Uganda’s top opposition leader, were widely condemned, but Muhoozi later said the threat was just a joke. While the government downplayed his posts, many still see them as a reflection of his growing influence.
Muhoozi has more than 1,000 followers on his reactivated account, down from over a million before his initial exit. He encouraged his supporters to follow him again, saying, “I want all my people back.”
His return to social media continues to spark debates over his role in Uganda’s future. As BBC reports, his bold moves keep people guessing about his next step.
