Protection for Donald Trump was increased a few weeks ago because U.S. officials found out about a plan by Iran to kill him.
This extra security included more agents, drones, and robotic dogs. The U.S. Secret Service and Trump’s team were informed about the threat, and they took steps to boost safety.
However, officials say this plot is not linked to the recent attempt to assassinate Trump in Pennsylvania.
The recent security breach involved a 20-year-old named Thomas Matthew Crooks, who managed to climb a building and get close enough to shoot at Trump.
Questions are being raised about how this happened despite the increased security. Local police were inside the building but didn’t stop Crooks in time.
Iran has been threatening Trump and his former secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, since they ordered a drone strike that killed Iranian General Qassim Soleimani in 2020.
Iran called the report about the plot “unsubstantiated and malicious.”
U.S. security officials are continuously monitoring new threats and adjusting their resources. The White House National Security Council says Iranian threats against former Trump officials have been ongoing as revenge for Soleimani’s killing.
President Joe Biden has ordered an independent review of the incident, and the Secret Service will also face investigations from Congress.
CBS and BBC report that the investigation hasn’t found any links between Crooks and any accomplices, whether foreign or domestic.
