Donald Trump has decided not to participate in another debate with his rival, Kamala Harris, before the upcoming election in November.
Trump made this clear just two days after their first debate in Philadelphia. According to Trump, Harris only wants another debate because she knows he “clearly” won the first one.
However, instant polls reported by the BBC show that many voters felt Harris performed better.
Trump suggested that Harris should focus on her job as vice president instead of pushing for another debate.
Meanwhile, Harris, speaking at a rally in North Carolina, said the voters deserve another debate because there is so much at stake.
BBC explains that both candidates claim victory from the first debate, but it seems Trump was put on the defensive by Harris’ pointed comments, especially about the 2021 Capitol riot and his rally crowd sizes.
Trump and his supporters accused the debate moderators of being biased in Harris’ favor, and Trump said he doesn’t see a need for another debate.
He compared the situation to a prizefighter who wants a rematch after losing. Despite this, Harris’ campaign has continued to call for another debate, arguing that the public deserves to see a clear choice between moving forward with Harris or going backward with Trump, as mentioned by the BBC.
The Harris campaign also feels that Trump’s refusal helps them, as voters will likely remember Harris looking presidential during the debate.
An independent voter from Utah told the BBC that Trump might be avoiding another debate because Harris performed better than he expected, and he’s now looking for a new way to challenge her.
According to the BBC, the polls show that Harris and Trump are in a very close race, especially in key battleground states.
Harris seems to have a slight edge, but the competition is fierce as both candidates continue to campaign hard leading up to the election.
