Trump Confirms Zelenskiy’s Visit to Sign Ukraine Minerals Deal (Credit: Reuters)
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy will visit Washington on Friday to sign a deal about rare earth minerals. According to Reuters, this agreement is part of Ukraine’s efforts to secure strong support from the U.S. as it tries to end Russia’s ongoing war.
Under the deal, Ukraine would share some revenue from its mineral resources with a fund jointly controlled by the U.S. However, Zelenskiy has called the agreement “preliminary,” meaning it’s not final yet. He stressed that the success of the deal depends on his talks with Trump and continued U.S. aid to Ukraine.
Trump, however, made it clear that the U.S. won’t provide far-reaching security guarantees to Ukraine. “I’m not going to make security guarantees beyond—very much. We’re going to have Europe do that,” he said, without giving more details.
Zelenskiy, in his nightly video address, emphasized the importance of U.S. security guarantees to protect Ukraine from future Russian attacks. He also said that continued American aid is crucial for Ukraine’s survival. “Strength is needed on the path to peace,” he added, as reported by Reuters.
This comes after U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson said there’s “no appetite” for more funding for Ukraine. Trump has also criticized Zelenskiy, calling him a “dictator” and urging him to secure peace with Russia quickly.
Zelenskiy clarified that the current draft agreement doesn’t treat Ukraine as a debtor that has to pay back billions for past military aid. He hopes the deal will be a success if the U.S. provides security guarantees, but he acknowledged that much depends on his talks with Trump.
Meanwhile, fighting continues in Ukraine, with frequent Russian missile and drone attacks making it Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War Two.
As the world watches, this deal could be a turning point for Ukraine—or it might fade quietly. For now, all eyes are on the upcoming talks between Trump and Zelenskiy.
