Donald Trump has declared, “America’s decline is over,” as he begins his second term as President with big promises and quick actions. Speaking from the US Capitol Rotunda, Trump announced sweeping measures, including declaring a national emergency at the US-Mexico border. He vowed to stop illegal immigration, send troops to the border, and label certain gangs and drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations. Trump also plans to reinstate the Remain in Mexico policy, making migrants stay in Mexico while waiting for asylum decisions. BBC reports these actions aim to completely reshape US immigration policies.
In his inaugural speech, Trump said he is optimistic about reversing what he called a “betrayal” from Joe Biden’s presidency. “The golden age of America begins right now,” he said, promising to defend the country from any threats. As reported by BBC, Trump plans to return millions of undocumented immigrants to their home countries and even end birthright citizenship, which gives automatic citizenship to children born in the US. However, BBC explains that changing this would be very difficult, as it’s protected by the US Constitution.
Trump also pledged to overhaul the US trade system and declared a National Energy Emergency to lower energy costs for Americans. While he talked about taxing foreign countries to help Americans, BBC notes no new tariffs were introduced on his first day. Trump did, however, make symbolic promises like renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” and returning Mount Denali to its old name, Mount McKinley. He even mentioned plans to “take back” the Panama Canal, saying it’s unfairly benefiting China.
BBC highlights that Trump’s administration also intends to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion policies within the government, officially recognizing only two genders—male and female.
Following his speech, Trump was expected to sign executive orders at a desk in the Capital One Arena, where about 20,000 supporters gathered for the inauguration parade and festivities. BBC reports that this smaller crowd, due to freezing weather, is far less than the 220,000 people originally expected.
Trump’s bold start reflects his determination to reshape America, but many of his ideas, as BBC emphasizes, face legal and political hurdles ahead.
