Donald Trump and Kamala Harris are arguing over whether to mute microphones during their upcoming debate, scheduled for 10 September on ABC. According to BBC, Trump wants the same rules used in his debate with Joe Biden, where microphones were muted when one candidate wasn’t speaking.
However, Harris’s campaign prefers that both microphones stay on throughout the debate, allowing candidates to interrupt each other if necessary.
BBC reports that Harris’s team believes she can handle Trump’s interruptions and that he should not rely on a mute button to avoid challenges.
Trump expressed doubts about the fairness of ABC and even hinted that he might skip the debate. He previously agreed to the muting rule during a CNN debate but now suggests that Harris doesn’t want to face him directly.
BBC notes that Trump’s campaign accused Harris of trying to change the agreed-upon debate rules, while Harris’s team denied this.
On his social media platform, Trump questioned whether ABC would share debate questions with Harris in advance.
This isn’t the first time he has considered skipping a debate, as earlier this month, he said he would only participate if Fox News hosted it but later changed his stance.
BBC highlighted that as the election approaches, Harris’s campaign has raised $540 million since Biden stepped down, while Trump’s campaign raised $138.7 million in July, with $327 million in cash reserves.
