A top opposition politician in Malawi, Patricia Kaliati, is facing charges of planning to harm President Lazarus Chakwera. Kaliati, who is the Secretary-General of the UTM party, was taken into custody last week under suspicions of plotting “with others to commit a serious crime,” as reported by BBC.

On Monday, Kaliati appeared in a Lilongwe court but did not speak, though her lawyer insisted she is innocent. BBC reported that her arrest has stirred claims from other opposition members who argue that the accusations are politically motivated, possibly aimed at weakening her position ahead of the 2025 presidential race.

Supporters of UTM gathered outside the court, chanting anti-government songs, as noted by AFP. In the hearing, it was mentioned that two people linked to the alleged plan are on the run. However, the judge allowed Kaliati to be released on bail while investigations continue, even as the prosecutor requested additional detention time.

BBC noted that the UTM party was part of the ruling government until June, when they separated after the tragic death of the party’s previous leader, Saulos Chilima, who was also the vice-president and died in a plane crash.

Since then, Kaliati has stepped up as a candidate for UTM’s leadership, aiming to challenge President Chakwera in the next election. Once a primary school teacher, Kaliati is known for her blunt and direct style, making her a prominent figure in Malawi’s political landscape.

The police have stated, per BBC, that they are following legal procedures and will respect her rights during the investigation.
