Dozens of workers at TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, in Singapore have been hospitalized due to a suspected food poisoning outbreak.
On Tuesday, 60 employees showed symptoms of gastroenteritis, with 57 needing hospital treatment, according to local media.
The food poisoning incident is under investigation by health and food safety officials. ByteDance, which uses external caterers for meals, has stated that it is cooperating with authorities to find out what caused the illness.
Seventeen ambulances were dispatched to the Singapore office to help those affected. A ByteDance spokesperson assured that the company is taking the situation seriously, supporting the sick employees, and working with emergency services.
The Singapore Food Agency and the Ministry of Health have emphasized that food operators must follow strict safety standards, and they will take action against any that fail to do so.
ByteDance, founded in China in 2012, is best known for its popular apps Douyin and TikTok, with TikTok being used by over a billion people globally.
The company now operates from Singapore and Los Angeles but remains owned by ByteDance.
