At the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, some big issues have been left out of the spotlight, even though they’re important.
According to the BBC, Democrats have mainly focused on promoting Kamala Harris’s qualifications and popular topics like abortion rights and healthcare, but they’ve avoided talking about identity politics and diversity efforts.
Four years ago, discussions around racism and police reform were central, but this year, these conversations have been minimal.
Even topics like transgender rights, which have been heavily debated, have been mostly ignored on the convention stage, according to the BBC.
Another issue that the Democrats have avoided, as the BBC notes, is the internal disagreements within the party, especially around military support for Israel.
Outside the convention, protesters have gathered, but inside, the topic hasn’t received much attention.
While Bernie Sanders did call for a ceasefire in Gaza, the divide within the party is still present, with some favoring different approaches to these conflicts.
The BBC also highlights that, unlike past conventions where disagreements were more visible, this year’s event has been more controlled.
Lastly, the topic of immigration has been almost entirely left out of the discussion. According to the BBC, the Biden administration has faced criticism for the rise in border crossings, and the Harris campaign seems to be avoiding the subject.
Instead, the focus has been on blaming Donald Trump for problems at the border. However, reports suggest this might change, with some speakers expected to address immigration later.
