Actor Sebastian Stan, who plays Donald Trump in the controversial movie The Apprentice, said the former president “should be thankful” for how the film presents a complicated look at his life, according to BBC.

The movie focuses on Trump’s younger years in New York as a real estate businessman and highlights his mentor, lawyer Roy Cohn, played by Jeremy Strong from Succession.

Trump didn’t like the movie, calling it “fake and classless,” and threatened to sue the filmmakers, hoping it would fail at the box office.

Despite these legal threats, director Ali Abbasi told BBC that the hardest part of making the movie was finding someone to distribute it in the U.S. The Apprentice premiered in the UK at the London Film Festival after struggling in the U.S. box office.

The film, which shows how Trump’s personality was shaped by Cohn, portrays him in a serious way instead of the usual over-the-top, comedic impressions. By the end, viewers can see how Cohn’s influence helped shape Trump’s approach to business and life.

While some think the movie might influence voters, the director said it’s not meant to be political, just a story about Trump’s journey.

According to the BBC, Trump denied certain scenes in the movie, including a controversial part involving his ex-wife Ivana, who had made and later downplayed accusations of assault.

Abbasi said the film focused on the deeper tragedy of Trump and Ivana’s relationship rather than stirring controversy.

Overall, Sebastian Stan felt that the movie gave Trump a complex portrayal, something no one else had done before.

BBC reported that Stan thought Trump should be grateful for the in-depth look at his life.
