A Texas judge has temporarily stopped President Biden’s new immigration program aimed at protecting undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens from deportation.
This program, announced in June, was designed to help over 500,000 people who have been in the U.S. for at least ten years and have been married to American citizens.
The program would have allowed these individuals to apply for legal status and work permits without leaving the country.
However, the judge’s order means the program is on hold for at least two weeks while the court reviews a lawsuit from 16 Republican-led states challenging it.
Judge J. Campbell Barker’s decision, which can be extended, prevents the processing of applications but allows the Department of Homeland Security to continue accepting them.
The ruling reflects ongoing debates about immigration policy and its impact on families.
Supporters of the program say it would help keep families together, while critics argue it amounts to granting amnesty to those who entered the U.S. illegally.
The case is significant as immigration remains a hot topic for voters ahead of the upcoming presidential election.
