Sudan’s Army Vows to Keep Fighting Despite Peace Efforts, Says Top General

Sudan’s army has promised to continue fighting in the country’s ongoing civil war, even though there are international efforts to create peace, according to the BBC.

Lt Gen Ibrahim Gabir, a top Sudanese general, told the BBC that peace talks can continue, but the army won’t stop fighting until they regain control, especially in the capital, Khartoum, which is currently held by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The two sides have been fighting since April of last year after their leaders clashed over the future of Sudan. The war has caused widespread hunger and forced millions of people to flee their homes, as reported by the BBC.

Gen Gabir explained that the army is pushing for the RSF to leave the areas it occupies, and he expressed confidence that the army has the momentum to win.

BBC highlighted that the general also denied reports of famine in Sudan, even though aid groups have warned that parts of the country are facing severe hunger.

He blamed the RSF for the humanitarian crisis, accusing them of looting aid and blocking supplies from reaching people in need.

Although there have been some improvements in delivering aid, especially in areas like Darfur, BBC reports that the situation is still extremely dire, with limited humanitarian access to many regions.

Despite accusations of war crimes, including bombings and attacks on schools and hospitals, Gen Gabir admitted that while individuals in the army may commit crimes, he doesn’t see it as an issue involving the entire military.

The Sudan War Monitor, a group of researchers tracking the conflict, told the BBC that the war is likely to drag on because Sudan is such a large country, and both sides have significant forces, making it hard for any single battle to decide the outcome.

Still, Gen Gabir remains confident that the army will eventually win and rebuild Sudan, BBC noted.
