Advances in health and fitness have made it easier than ever to live a healthy lifestyle, yet Parade reports that a new study found Gen X and Millennials are facing higher risks for 17 different types of cancer.

Dr. Karen Knudsen, the head of the American Cancer Society, told Parade that this increase is likely due to a mix of factors like changes in diet, lifestyle, and even environmental exposure.

Oncologists are especially worried about cancers like breast, colon, lung, and pancreatic cancer, which are becoming more common in these younger generations.

According to Parade, unhealthy habits like eating more processed foods, living a sedentary lifestyle, and the rise of obesity are all contributing to the increased cancer risks.

Both Dr. Knudsen and Dr. Alessio Pigazzi from City of Hope Orange County emphasized to Parade that making healthier choices can lower these risks.

They recommend maintaining a healthy weight, eating better, staying active, and avoiding smoking and too much alcohol. Parade also notes that reducing exposure to harmful chemicals and pollutants is important.

In addition to lifestyle changes, Parade reports that knowing your family history and getting regular cancer screenings are vital steps in protecting your health.

If certain cancers run in your family, it’s important to talk to your doctor and get screened earlier.

Parade highlights that taking control of your health by making these changes can significantly reduce the chances of developing cancer, even in younger generations.
