Sony has announced a new, more powerful PlayStation 5 Pro, which will cost £699.99 when it launches on November 7. This upgraded console offers better graphics and smoother gameplay compared to the original PS5. However, it’s significantly more expensive, making it Sony’s priciest console yet.
The PS5 Pro aims to eliminate the choice between high-quality visuals and smooth performance, providing both. According to Mark Cerny, the PS5’s lead architect, this console addresses a long-standing issue for gamers.
Analyst Piers Harding-Rolls suggests that Sony is hoping the enhanced performance will persuade people to upgrade and spend more on games. Christopher Dring from GamesIndustry.biz noted that while the PS5 Pro is designed for dedicated gamers, it might not impact the broader market significantly, especially with current console sales struggling.
The release of the PS5 Pro follows a trend of updated consoles offering improved features without exclusive games. Paul Tamburro from PlayStation LifeStyle criticized the high price and lack of a disc drive as potential drawbacks.
This move is Sony’s second major console upgrade, following the PS4 Pro in 2016. It also comes as PCs continue to advance with powerful graphics cards, although these can be as expensive as a full console. Despite some speculation about backward compatibility with older PlayStation games, there’s no confirmation of this in the announcement.
The PS5 Pro’s launch aims to cater to enthusiasts and compete with the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto VI, which Sony hopes will look best on their new console, according to BBC.
