Sheikh Hasina’s Son Says She Will Return to Bangladesh After Elections
Sheikh Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, says that his mother, the ousted Bangladeshi Prime Minister, will return to Bangladesh once elections are announced. Hasina, who recently fled to India amid massive protests and unrest, is currently staying there.
Joy told the BBC that his mother will come back when the interim government, led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus, decides to hold elections. The interim government was formed recently and includes two student protest leaders as advisers.
Joy is confident that if the elections are fair, his mother’s party, the Awami League, will win. He also mentioned that while it’s uncertain if Hasina will return to politics, she is eager to come back to Bangladesh.
The protests against Hasina began over job quotas but grew into a larger movement demanding her removal. Joy expressed frustration over the violence and damage caused by the protests, including attacks on their family properties. He is upset by the way the situation has unfolded but remains hopeful for a fair resolution.
While there have been rumors of Hasina seeking asylum, Joy denies these and says her goal remains to return to Bangladesh.
