Russian Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov has been accused of taking bribes and has been put in jail by a court in Moscow. He denies the charges.

Ivanov, who has been overseeing military projects in Russia since 2016, is accused of accepting large bribes. This arrest comes amidst criticisms of corruption in Russia, although such high-profile cases have been rare since the Ukraine invasion in 2022.

Ivanov, who is an ally of Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, has been accused of involvement in corruption schemes related to construction projects in Ukraine, according to the Anti-Corruption Foundation.

If found guilty, Ivanov could face up to 15 years in jail. This move against a high-ranking official is unusual and could have implications for Shoigu’s position.

The arrest has also attracted international attention, with Ivanov being sanctioned by the US, UK, and EU.
