Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg to Step Down, Following His Father’s Example
Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg surprised everyone with big news during his Christmas Eve speech on Dec. 24, 2024. The 69-year-old royal announced he will abdicate the throne after almost 25 years of leadership. His reign, which began in 2000, will officially end on Oct. 3, 2025, Parade reported.
“This is my last Christmas speech as Head of State,” Henri shared emotionally, according to Hello! magazine. He reflected on his time as a leader, saying he was grateful and proud to have helped Luxembourg grow and thrive.
Parade highlighted how he talked about technological and social progress, economic changes, and even challenges like conflicts that brought the nation closer together.
Henri’s son, Prince Guillaume, 43, and his wife, Stéphanie, 40, will take over as Grand Duke and Duchess. Henri expressed confidence in their ability to lead and said they’ll work hard for the country’s success. Parade noted that this abdication mirrors what Henri’s father, Grand Duke Jean, did in 1999, when he stepped down on Christmas Eve after 36 years on the throne.
This passing of the torch during the holiday season shows a deep sense of tradition and family values. Parade captured how the moment reflects not just a shift in leadership but also a time for the nation to embrace new beginnings.
