Louis Gossett Jr., the acclaimed actor known for his groundbreaking roles in “Roots” and “An Officer and a Gentleman,” has passed away at the age of 87.

He was the first Black man to win an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

His family confirmed his death, although the cause was not disclosed.

Gossett’s career spanned from Broadway to Hollywood, where he faced racism but persevered to become a trailblazer in the entertainment industry.

Beyond acting, he founded the Eracism Foundation to combat racism. Gossett leaves behind a legacy of excellence and advocacy.
