Mass kidnappings are happening again in Nigeria. Two incidents occurred within a week: one in Borno state, where suspected militants abducted women and children, and another in Kaduna state, where gunmen took over 280 children and teachers from a school.

These events, although seemingly unrelated, raise concerns about the safety of Nigerians. Kidnapping for ransom has become a profitable business in Nigeria due to economic challenges, including high food prices and insecurity in farming areas.

The inability to farm has led to economic desperation, pushing some to resort to kidnapping for income. Nigeria’s porous borders and regional Islamist violence also contribute to the insecurity.

To address this, Nigeria needs to collaborate with neighboring countries and ensure perpetrators are brought to justice.
